People who wish to follow a career in medicine should attend medical school, but they should realize that it takes serious commitment. Studies can take up to 16 years to complete and this time includes undergraduate school, medical school and residency training in the specialty of their choice. As a doctor, a person is required to maintain certification and licensure. Continuing education helps a person to keep up with advancements in medicine and technology.

Doctors are able to help patients become well while at the same time increasing your knowledge of medicine and science. Doctors are invaluable to the community and are treated with the appropriate amount of respect. Doctors will never be out of work and this means that doctors will always have job security.

No matter where a person decides to settle, the skills of a qualified doctor is always in demand. There are several career options available to a qualified doctor, which allows for flexibility. These factors contribute to making a career as a doctor popular.

Approximately one third of doctors work as primary care givers and they are normally family physicians, internists or pediatricians. Sick people usually visit these care givers first when they are not feeling well. Primary care givers are more than equipped to deal with patients who are adults and children. If it is necessary, the primary care giver will then forward patients to a physician who has specialized.

This career choice offers doctors the opportunity to grow financially, intellectually and personally. Many doctors are working for HMOs as there changes being introduced in the health care field. This means that less doctors are going into private practice.

It is a challenging career that you will enter into when deciding to become a doctor. The entry requirements into medical school are quite tough. The responsibility that comes with this career is huge. The rewards after completing the studies does make it all worthwhile.
