Parkinson's Disease Dentistry
Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder affecting the central nervous system. While it is most widely known for the muscle tremors and involuntary movements that it causes, another symptom that appears as the disease progresses is dementia, very similar to Alzheimer’s disease (detailed above). The medications used to treat and delay the dementia often cause the side effect Xerostomia, or dry mouth. The lack of saliva production attributes to quicker rates of tooth decay, so more frequent cleanings and checkups are required.
The muscle tremors of Parkinson’s disease also cause many problems for the patient’s oral health because the ability to brush effectively is severely limited. Furthermore the tremors make a conventional visit to the dentist office difficult and dangerous, as a sudden movement could result in injury. Diamond Bar Surgery Center deals with this issue by using sleep dentistry, or full sedation, to safely work on the patient. Dr. Adams is one of the most skilled and experienced in the Southern California area for performing sleep dentistry, so contact our office in Diamond Bar, CA to discuss how we can accommodate your unique needs.
