Epilepsy / Seizure Disorders Dentistry
Epilepsy and other seizure disorders can create a unique set of problems for the oral health of those who suffer them. As well as the numerous side effects from seizure medication, the most obvious problem is the seizures themselves. Characterized by the sudden onset of violent shaking, the seizures can put the patients at great risk for injury if they occur during the middle of a procedure. At Diamond Bar Surgery Center, Dr. Adams and his staff will first interview the patient to fully understand the nature of their situation. They will ask questions regarding their past history of seizures, including their frequency, what medications they are currently taking to regulate them, and what signs could indicate that one is likely to happen. Should a seizure occur during a procedure, we understand that the most important thing is to remain calm while quickly removing any nearby objects or tools that might cause injury.
Many medications used to repress seizures cause an overall increased sensitivity throughout the mouth. One side effect is dry mouth (Xerostomia) which increases the chances of tooth decay since saliva is a natural cleanser for the teeth. Another is overgrown or swollen gums (Gingival hypertrophy) which can contribute to an increased risk for infection since the extra gum tissue can easily trap pockets of bacteria. These gums are also extra sensitive to trauma and even a slight prick or pressure during a procedure can cause bleeding. Furthermore any operation done in the mouth will require longer than average healing times and extra monitoring for infection. It is important that patients with Epilepsy be aware of these risks so they can find a dentist who will accommodate their needs like the dentists at Diamond Bar Surgery Center.
