Down Syndrome Dentistry
Down syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra chromosome on the 21st pair. Its effects on the individual are both physical and mental, and our office in Diamond Bar is renowned across Southern California for working with these patients. Although some experience severe mental limitations, those with Down syndrome are likely to only be mild or moderately disabled, so sleep dentistry is not normally required. Their speaking abilities often do not match their level of cognitive thought, as this is merely a consequence of their oral malformations. When working with these patients, we at Diamond Bar Surgery Center understand that extra time and attention is required to explain the details of the procedures. When they understand what is going on they have no reason to be afraid and Dr. Adams can gain their trust and cooperation for the procedure. Just this little bit of extra care makes all the difference for a smooth experience.
Physically there are several issues that make dental care for patients with Down syndrome unique. The immune system is underdeveloped, which results in higher rates of periodontal (gum) disease. Another underdevelopment is usually evident in the mid facial region of the nose and upper jaw. This gives the individuals an “open bite” which can affect chewing efficiency. An open bite combined with a restricted nasal cavity causes many to engage in mouth breathing, which dries the mouth and causes tooth decay. For all of the above reasons, thorough at home brushing and frequent checkups are recommended. Also we advise caregivers to contact our caring and flexible staff to set up a preliminary appointment so Dr. Adams can meet his new patient before any procedures take place.
