Autism Dentistry
At Diamond Bar Surgery Center we have extensive experience working with autistic children, and have had great success putting them at ease throughout the procedure. Autism is characterized by impaired social skills and communication. It is also often said that people with Autism have trouble understanding the world around them. A major reason why autistic dentistry is difficult is because people affected with the disorder have a tendency to engage in repetitive behavior. Every day follows a strict schedule that when deviated from, like during a dental appointment, can cause panic and stress. Furthermore, this stress can be elevated by the fact that they are interacting with a stranger.
Dr. Adams has a remarkable ability to work with these patients, and his gentle nature often gains their trust allowing him to work with only mild sedation. Some people with Autism are too hyperactive so after consulting with the caregiver Dr. Adams may decide to use sleep dentistry, which is complete sedation, to guarantee their safety.
